South West France

St Jean de Luz

From the dunes in south west France we headed south to a town just 10 minutes from the Spanish bordr, St Jean de Luz. A chic town on a long sandy bay, decorated with striped marquees, which sweeps from the lighthouse to the headland. We camped a few km's out of town and enjoyed the cycle in on the fantastic network of paths. We dined at sunset for Arno's birthday on fish of the day.

St Jean Pied de Port
We stopped here on the edge of town for lunch in our camper on a very hot day and couldn't resist the opportunity to see what's behind the stone walls surrounding this Basque town at the foot of the Pyrenees, just 8km from the Spanish border. The town is an important point on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela being the last stop before crossing the Pyrenees. "Pied de Port" meaning "foot of the pass".

The scallop shell, the iconic symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostella. It is painted on trees and pathways to guide the way. The lines of the shell supposedly represent the different routes the pilgrims travelled from all over the world, with all the walking trails leading to one point: the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela.

A message from the Basque supporters for independence
